Peugeot 307 2.0 petrol 2002 - Catalytic Convertor fault / anti pollution fault - judk

Help please!!!!

I have a peugeot 307 and the engine management light is flashing with the screen going crazy showing cataylic convertor fault and anti pollution fault. The car also misfires really badly too!

We have tried better fuel as i have seen people mention but that hasnt worked...changed spark plugs and coil pack but these have also made no difference.

Few people has suggested perhaps changing the oxygen sensor, fuel injectors and even all of the tappetts??

Has anyone had this problem, i dont want to be changing everything for it not to be that!

This seems to be a common fault with peugeots, if only i had known this before i bought the car :(

Doesn't the engine have two coil packs? Have they both been replaced. Can you trust the condition of the replacement coil(s) ie are they new or second hand? Misfiring in a petrol (particularly at high load/low RPM) is often a sign of coil pack failure. Prolonged misfiring will overheat the cat and render it useless.

Contrary to popular belief, a failed O2 sensor will NOT cause misfiring. It doesn't operate immediately after cold starts (it needs to get hot to operate properly), and the signal is ignored at wide open throttle. It is simply used to fine tune the mixture for correct catalytic converter operation. Forget 98 octane petrol, naturally aspirated engines seldom benefit from it.
WHEN does the car misfire? Low rpm, high rpm, idle or high load conditions? When the engine is hot or cold. Do you see any smoke when the car is misfiring. Panic not, it's much more likely to be a sticking EGR valve, or a dirty air mass flow sensor, than something mechanically wrong. More information please!

im not aware of it have 2 coil packs, so only 1 got replaced and it was new. The car only misfires when it is cold. As soon as i start it up it misfires bad but once the engine has warmed up it goes away. When the catalylic convertor fault and antipollution fault comes up it misfires even worse. No smoke comes from the car. Whats an EGR valve? I really hope you can help me.

EGR=Exhaust Gas Recirculation. Basically a proportion of exhaust gases are recirculated into the intake via a controllable valve, whch has the result of reducing NOx emissions. EGR should not be used at idle speed or high load conditions and so the valve should be closed. During cruise/mid load the valve should open. Excessive EGr causes misfire. If the valve is coked with carbon and cannot close properly, this could cause misfire.

Another option is the mass flow sensor. This measures the rate of air flow into the engine so the ECU knows how much fuel to inject. If this malfunctions (possibly because it is dirty) the engine would miscalculate how much fuel to inject. This too could cause misfire and emissions problems.

Since the problem only occurs when the engine is cold I doubt that the O2 sensor is to blame.

Valve tappets? Run a compression test (compression testers are cheap). If you get decent values (say >180psi) (then the valves are opening and seating correctly, and I'd forget about them.

The only other cold start related problem, I can think of is the idle speed control. Usually this is a stepper motor which is essentially a secondary throttle which is controlled by the ECU. This tries to maintain a desired idle speed regardless of driver input. As the engine warms up, the friction reduces and so the air flow (and fuelling) can be reduced. This is also the anti stall technology that allows you to let the clutch out when in gear without stalling. If the car has developed a tendency to stall, this is where I'd be looking.

I think you will find that this problem may be connected to sticking hydraulic tappets when engine is cold. This seems to affect early model 307 petrol engines.Peugeot have a re-work of cyl head and tappets but it is not a cheap fix.May be a good idea to get an engine oil flush and replace oil filter and refil with a top quality oil to the correct grade.hth

Hi There,

I have had a 52 plate 2.0 307 petrol in the workshop with exactly the same symptoms you have described above, on looking at the live data on a diagnostic machine it would apear that the down stream O2 sensor would give a rich reading at idle then lean right out, run rough to a point at which it would sometimes stall or sort it self out and idle correctly. Fuel trims all over the place.

Alot of these 2002 model year cars were not fitted with fuel filters (check yours, ours was not) and this causes excessive wear on the injectors, anyway cut a long story short get the injectors checked, we had number 4 injector leaking and no spray pattern and 1, 2 & 3 with poor spray patterns. Changed all four injectors, cleared the codes car drives like a dream fuel econ also up. One happy customer!!.

Check your injectors it is more than likely the problem.

Limey.

Hi there, I have a (2002) Peugeot 307 2litre Petrol /Automatic which is exhibiting the same faults you have descibed above in your forum.

On start up from cold in the morning the engine runs fine for the first 30 seconds. It then starts to idle very roughly as though it is on 3 cylinders. If left idleing it will then turn on the engine managment light with either 'Anti pollution fault' or Catalytic Convertor fault message.

Once driven for about 1 km the car starts to run normally and doesn't miss a beat until the next morning and that first cold start again. This fault repeats itself every day.

What I have done is change the coil pack and sparkplugs - this did not fix the probem

What i did find was that the fuel injector on cylinder (1) was not firing during the stage when the engine was misfiring. I suspected the fuel injector and swapped them around in the housing but the fault still remained on cylinder(1), so I beleive I can eliminate the fuel injector. If I remove the wiring lead plug from injector(1) during the misfiring phase it makes no difference to the way the engine is running.

It appears the ECU is shutting down cylinder (1) straight after the cold start so I am thinking maybe it is a sticky lifter which clears once the engine warms up. ECU notes this and returns power to the injector?? I have tried engine flush and new oil but this has not cured the problem. Maybe this needs to be tried again?

If you have any ideas I would certainly appreciate your imput as I am running out of them. Thanks

Hello!

I had the same problem. I just wanted to know did you find out what was the cause and how did you fix it?

I will be very grateful for your answer.

Hi my peugeot is having the same problems. intially, stuttery start when cold then ok until I had the coilpack changed. now the engine is all over the place, constantly. took it back to the garage and had a cat conv error message and flashing light whilst driving there.

did this user ever get it sorted?

Many Thanks

Hi,

Has anyone had any luck solving this problem as mine has started showing this fault. The engine runs very roughly and stutters.

HELP :-)

I have owned my 2002 307 2.0 XSI for 8 years I had this problem with the Anti pollution warning being displayed every week being intermitant. It was found to be one of the 2x O2 sensors on these 307. It has an up flow sensor and a down flow sensor. These are a very common to go as they wear out due to the heat and lack of protection. On mine it was the up flow o2 sensor on the exhaust before the catalytic converter. Don't buy a Peugeot part as they quoted me £180. I bought one from Parker's for £80 and it fixed the problem not seen any warnings now for 2 years.

I would change the Coil pack for the misfire. It is a complete part sits on top of the spark plugs easy to change best to do the spark plugs while your at it.

Hi.

this problem appeared last week in my car it started as everyone said like a mifire and once the engine got warm enough everything ran normally yesterday the car ran normally and suddenlly the engine light strated flashing and the catalyic convetor warning appeared , car went into limp mode and today it stopped working the engine won't start and engine light is on " not flashing "

please can you tell me the diagonostic steps ?

This problem is killing me! I am actually ageing prematurely as a result! I'm taking my 30s*** to a guy with the Peugeot Planet software tomorrow, but from what i can gather, even that may be inconclusive..... What a crap car! Although i wish i had never bought it- i have in fact learnt more about cars in the last month of trying to fix it than in the last 20 years of driving!

I see this problem all over the interwebs, BUT no one seems to have actually fixed it! WTF?

HAS ANYONE FIXED THIS at all?

Peace be with all of you. I'm new here. I'm from croatia. My car is P307 2.0 16v 2001. wit LPG. I have the same problems but only when it's running on benzin (petrol). When the engine is running on petrol it's bad idling und hard to start at all. After the engine is hot it' just a littlebit better. When its on LPG thet is no problems. ECU is sendin mesage "antipolution foult" whot code P0170 (proplems whit trims), und MIL is on. On LPG sometimes can occour the same message antiplut... but only when I start brifly (fast) with full throttle accel.
One bosh mechanical detrcted possible mistake with EGR. Maybe this could be a solition to change the EGR valve. I would do that bit iz's verry expencive here. It's nor bad to drive when it's on LPG so I'll weit. Anny solution accour?

Hello. I have a Peugeot 307 2.0 16V engine with 100 kW. I have the same symptoms as everyone here. The engine runs 30 seconds and then calmly shakes and runs on 3 cylinders. After warming up the engine now everything is calm again. I changed the plugs, ignition rail, water temperature sensor, all injectors and it happens constantly. I still think every day what is a cold engine. Diagnosis always displays an error cylinders numbered 1.

Solved anyone? Does anyone know what causes it?
