04 2.5 v6 - is it possible to have a blocked cat? - sandy56
Hi
Anyone heard of a petrol car suffering from a blocked cat?
I thought only diesels had this problem?

Ford main dealer claiming that the reported lack of power may be due to a blocked cat and want to remove them to check?

I think the problem is due to a failed IMRC unit.

many thanks for your input.

I have heard of the guts of a cat falling to bits and causing problems, I suppose that would count as a blocked cat, but not by exhaust fumes, which as you know, looke pretty clean on a car compared to a diesel.
Has it been damaged by knocking, accident, jacking?

Doesn't the 2.5 have three or is it four cats??

I think it has at least two cats.
No known problems with damage and no strange noises and the car runs fine, smooth, just a lack of get up and go.

Yes it does happen to petrol cars, I have seen it with my own eyes. If I remember correctly the honeycomb centre part had come loose, turned around somehow and blocked off the flow for the exhaust gas. It was a few years ago now and I do recall that it was sufficient to stop the car from actually running at all.

My old 2001 Mk3 2.5 had three, one on each downpipe and one underneath.
BIL had a collapsed cat an a Granada V6, same symptoms as above, lack of get up and go.

Hi,

I have the same problem with mine at the moment same year as yours and same engine, I am at the point were its not fun to drive any more the car feels heavy and slugish to drive. But am hoping to get a ford mechanic to look at it for me and will let you no what the he comes up with.

Just to let you know that I had my car fixed. Removed the 2 pre cats- partially blocked and replaced the main cat ( partially blocked). I used an independent specialist. The car is transformed, even smoother but now fast, even economy has improved to ~30 mpg.

The only fly in the ointment is that now the engine warning light has come on- due to poor emissions, ( still legal thoough). I am getting this problem fixed at the weekend, I hope.

next move is improve the brakes, and major service.

good luck

Just make sure that the management light isn't due to a fault that's damaging the cats. A misfire or fuelling problem could wreck the new cats very quickly.

Total fix was about £1200.00
I did the main cat first -replaced with new, and had the two precats removed.
Some months later I had the two new pre cats installed.
The cats were all partially blocked and there is no way of clearing them.

Overall I would recommend that you get it fixed in one go- should be cheaper overall.

Try a price from Ford first, then get a price from a good independent garage.

Now I have spent so much on it I will be keeping it for a while.

I had a problem with a back box that corroded internally and let the wadding block the outlet.

I shaped a piece of wire into a hooked end and went 'fishing' down the tailpipe. I pulled out copious amonts of wadding. I removed the back box and fished it all out from the other end as that had a larger hole closer to the box.
