04 1.4 New brake discs required? - The Grey Man
Hi

I took our 30k mile 2004 Jazz in to the local main dealer for one of these free winter check ups. Advised that require new front pads as only 20% left (not surprising as these have never been replaced yet) but also that the front discs are "lipped" and also need replaced.

Question - what are "lipped" discs and is it normal to require new discs at this low mileage. Is it inadvisable to replace pads but retain discs in "lipped" state.

Certainly want braking performance to be optimum so won't penny pinch if this does need done, £215 quoted for front pads and discs.

Would appreciate any advice given.

Pad wear seems about right for typical Jazz owner at 30k. Most brakes seem to require disc change at second pad change. A small lip on the outer and inner edge of the swept area is not unusual provided the swept area is not to grooved or pitted. You could ask the garage "is it really necessary". Certainly the price quoted - fitted is not bad using Honda parts. However if you can DIY Mintex, Bendix or Ferodo would be half that in parts from a local factors, and about 30 minutes to change yourself.

Brake pads are now as hard as the discs themselves these days. Gone are the days of soft asbestos linings that you could get 4 or more pad changes to one set of discs.

By lipped, it means the area on the outer edge where the pads aren't in contact with the discs and therefore haven't worn. You can get away with having this lip skimmed off, but it all depends if the discs have reached the manfacturers recommended minimum thickness or not.

When you have a 'free' service of any kind it costs the dealer money. to recoup that cost they 'suggest' certain repairs are necessary. I suspect when they mean lipped the very outer edge which does not touch the pad is thicker - which is normal and what you'd expect. I gather they didn't do the job properly and tell you how close the discs were worn down to - i.e how close to minimum thicknes?? I would strongly suggest you take it to an independent repairer - it will be cheaper and you would get a second opinion as to the brake disc wear. You won't be penny pinching as all brake pads have to be to a minimum spec now and have to match or exceed OE spec. I suspect you they have more life left in them than the main dealer is letting on.

Hope this helps

Thanks for replies above.....

"However if you can DIY Mintex, Bendix or Ferodo would be half that in parts from a local factors, and about 30 minutes to change yourself"

For someone who has only ever changed a spare wheel how difficult is it to change brake discs/pads? Would I need to find a Haynes Manual or equivalent for the Jazz to learn?

Perhaps foolhardy but times being what they are it is tempting to try and save a few quid!

I would not touch them if you are unsure. I changed my lad's Accord pads and they were very easy and simple, but expensive using dealer parts.
Your 'normal' service will tell you when worn, or the MOT man will soon enough, usually the latter is the deciding factor.
I would ignore the sales spiel myself.

If you can measure the disc thickness at the braking surface, you will probably need a simple calliper to do this, then the minimum thickness is 19mm.
Our Jazz needed new pads at 30,000 miles but the discs were well within the wear limit. In fact I think they still are at nearly 50,000 miles.
I like to remove the loose surface rust from the edge of the disc and the lip when I replace pads. Not essential but it looks neater and can only do good in the long run.
Once the brake calliper is removed, discs are easier to replace than pads.
There's a Haynes guide for the Jazz now.

I was told 18mths and 10K miles ago that the front pads on our Jazz "could do with replacing soon". They quoted the "Honda Happiness" price of £85 (pads only).

The dealership called 6mths later to see if I'd like to get them done.

Before its last service I looked at them and they still looked fine and the wear wasn't even mentioned when I collected the car after service. Car is on 35K miles now and is only used around town.

Apparently they will squeal audibly for 1000 miles as they reach their wear limit.

I've held off thinking we were going to get a new Jazz but maybe I'll get them changed (or possibly even do it myself as the weather warms up).

There is an online guide here (works best with Internet Explorer) www.hondafitjazz.com/manual.htm (click on the icons to show pictures).

Indeed, Japanese Brakes tend to have a physical wear indicator in the form of a piece of soft metal welded/rivited to the pad which will touch the brake disc when the pad is worn to excess. This will create a 'shrieking' noise which should be easy to hear. It is a simple but very effective wear indicator and I am suprised no "technicians" have informed you of this.

With 20% wear still left on the pads (or so we are led to beleive), it's unlikely its reached the 'rivet' stage yet...... Hence it wasn't mentioned.

"Rivet" stage? Oh I give up! No wonder some people leave forums more confused than when they started. Do not try changing the pads if you are not confident. Practical work is not as easy as theory or tapping a few semi-truths on a keyboard, espicially if you are not used to it in any form.

Perhaps Chuckie could be a moderator. Then if he disagrees with anyone, of if we are simply wrong, he can delete, so people will not waste their time.

So the site would be easier to get round with his 0.10 posts per day.

Quality not quantity dear boy. I've not quite morphed into Victor Meldrew yet, have I? lol

>"Rivet" stage? Oh I give up!

Why? It shows familiarity with drum brakes and possibly clutch linings, as well as appreciation of wear limits. Aircraft disc pads often have rivets, too...

1) Front discs and pads
2) Physical wear indicator

Read the info. This is turning into mis-information now so I'm out. Good luck and Ciao

Good grief! What's the Honda 'grin-and-bear-it' price, I wonder? The last set I bought for the Xedos were under £20...

Many thanks for airing this problem here. I took my Jazz for its 2year service and, at less than 17000 miles, was told I needed new pads AND new discs!!! Last year the pads were only 20% worn; this year they were 70% worn (although when they called me back to clarify things, this became 75% worn!) Needless to say, I shall ignore their advice and wait until the brakes squeal. But what abysmal service we get from the authorised dealerships.

By coincidence the Prelude (now 11 years old and an automatic) was in today for new front tyres (yes, on the front!) so I took a closer look at the pads while the wheels were off. They've now passed 50k miles and are just about half worn. The discs are as clean as a whistle. I think the back pads are original and now about half worn at 86k. The discs are also fine.
Cynical? Moi?

That's £85 fitted. I think the pads alone from a dealer are around £45 and even on ebay there are various brands for £25 ish with postage. I think £85 is OK - I haven't done this kind of thing for many years and I usually end up hurting myself or scratching my glasses so it might be cheaper to let someone else do it. :)

How else could they squeal?
