97 1.8 Heater blower not working - golf3driver
Hi hope someone can help me with this as its soooo cold...... I have a P reg Peugeot 406 1.8 LX petrol, and the heater blower used to work intermittingly. But now it does not work at all - the light for air-con does come on and so does the orange light on the button but no blower. The heat setting does work because you can feel the hot air if you put your hand over the vents but it has not got any blower at all. I changed the radiator a couple of months ago and put the proper coolant in, and since then it doesn?t seem to want to work anymore. Before I used to get my missus to nudge it with her feet in the passenger foot well to get it working only now it won?t even respond to that. Please help me before I freeze!!

Sounds like the heater blower or it's controller. Drop the fan assembly out, [3 screws] feed the motor direct and see if it runs.

the fan assembly behind the glovebox? and how and what do i feed it with?

Personally; I like chocolate Hob-Nobs - but these prefer 12 volts.

Take it to a garage if you're inexperienced with things electronic - too much disaster potential if you make a mistake.

good because i have run out of chocolate hob nobs :) striaght from the battery?

Preferably a second battery - on a bench for safety. [Basically; yes.]

If they are the same unit as the Citroen there will be two transistors riveted to a heat sink on the motor housing, they fail for a pastime.

ok, i have just taken the fan assembly out and connected two wires to the earth/black and red/live, and put them on the battery ( the one in car as i do not have a spare) and nothing.......

If those are the two going directly into the motor - then the motor has failed.

new motor then mate??

Cheap enough down the breakers.

Hi...

My blowere suddenly stopped working recently and I managed to find the fault and fix it for FREE!

Remove the fuse for the blower and test the actual fuse socket for power (Ignition and engine needs to be running for power to be there). If there is no power then the 'Back Cap' on your ignition is faulty. The section of fuse board that your blower fuse is on should be powered by the RED wire from the ignition cap. Simply cut this RED wire and connect it to any other fuse panel supply wire ( 'Tee' off your chosen power supply using a suitable connector block = 40A or above).

Another option for repairing the same fault would be to replace the 'Back Cap' which could turn out to be tricky.

My air con / heater blower is now working fine.

Hope this helps somebody!

Damian.

I have got a similar problem with my 99 coupe 2l auto. I just checked the fan motor but found the connectors on the wireing looms burnt, blackened and melted together. Any ideas on the problem or a fix? I am also wondering why no fuses blew?

Fuses blow when there is a direct short to earth and tend to get hot when there is over current in the circuit causing your melting.

In the case of the Citroens the fuse is underated, gets hot and destroys the fuse holder, if the fuse holder has burnt out you can fit an external fuse.

I have tried all of the things suggested (except taking a cutter to the wiring loom) I made good all the fuses, all the earthing points and exchanged the fan, with no result other than to demonstrate that it wasn't the fan but what (appears to have) fixed it was applying Servisol switch cleaning fluid to the sliding potentiometer on the blower control switch/PCB in the dashboard (you know Auto/off/manual). Now it works again and words cannot describe how happy I am!
