Citroen Xsara Heater issue - zedstar
Hi all,

My other half owns a Xsara, which seems to have a problem with the heater control which only works on control number 4 and does absolutley nothing on 1,2 or 3.

With winter coming she's in my ear everyday about getting it repaired and is fed up of having to wrap up like a santa claus!

Any ideas??

Resistors. Pretty easy to fix on most cars, don't know the Xsara that well though.

A few days ago the fan in my Xsara (HDI 110 hatchback 03) suddenly went up to full power. It doesn't matter whether I set it to auto (which is my usual setting), or 0, 1, 2 or 3 it goes full blast all the time. The temperature dial seems to work ok, if I change the temperature setting (its automatic airconditioning) the air temperature does change. If I turn off the air conditioning it has no effect on the fan speed.

Any ideas? Did anyone have any success finding the fan speed resistor mentioned above? Is this likely to be the cause of my problem too?

Surely yours should be covered under warranty?

Yes, it should be covered by warranty but

1) I'd prefer not to deal with my local Citroen garage - it's very time consuming taking the car there for them to have a look (leave it for a few hours), then be told they've got to order the part, then when they eventually get back to you many weeks later you have to book the car in to leave it for another few hours... Basically I'd rather fix it myself than go through that hassle if it's a simple case of ordering a part and fitting it myself.

2) I've installed an ICE Link kit to connect my iPod to the built in stereo. I'm not sure whether they will try to blame the problem on this (it's 3 months since I did that, and the fan problem has only just developed).

My Citroen dealer takes a dim view about people changing radios on multiplex cars. I wouldn't change my radio in my C5.

I take a dim view of my Citroen dealer, but that's beside the point. All I have done is added a kit that plugs into the CD autochanger port of the built in stereo. In fact the reason I did this was to avoid messing with the wiring too much.

My point was that I have had such a bad experience getting things done under warranty, that I'd rather pay for the parts and fit them myself than waste time going to the Citroen dealer.

Citroens aren't great quality, but they're great value for money. It's the poor service I've had from the dealers service department that is likely to put me off getting another Citroen. You've got to be able to trust them, and unfortunately I don't.

If anyone has experience of the Automatic Airconditioning in the Citroen Xsara, I'd still appreciate some help!

I've had a quick look and played with the various controls. It seems that the air sensor is still functioning - the little fan inside is working, and varying the temperature control still effects the air temperature. In fact, I've also found that changing the fan speed DOES have some effect. I almost get the impresssion that there are several fans, and that when the dial is set to 0 some of the fans are on full blast, and when I turn the dial up to max there are others on full blast. I hope this makes sense.

I seem to recall from the summer, when the car was really hot and the engine was first turned on I would get this loud fast fan noise, then once it had cooled the car down it would then slow down to a quiet noise.

It seems to be doing the same now, but it never goes quiet.

I might get time to go to the Citroen dealer at the end of this week, or the end of the following week, but in the meantime the noise is driving me mad. I can hardly hear the music from my stereo!

I had a feel behind the controls and the fan speed, temp and air direction controls all seem to be part of a sealed unit. I have no idea how this is removed. There doesn't seem to be a Haynes manual...

Does anyone know how the system is controlled, or where the fault is likely to be?

SNIPQUOTE!
Any ideas??

Just fixed this on a 2002 Xsara with aircon. There is a heater control module inside the fan. They fail often. Module costs £90. Remove trim under glove box, remove fan, replace module in fan. Takes 1 hour plus. Not difficult, except lying upside down !

I just wanted to add that thanks to this thread I have sucessfully fixed a fan fault on my sister's X reg Xsara with aircon.

The fault was that the fan was on full blast all the time. The resistors had gone and were an integral part of the fan motor. Removing and replacing the fan fuse to turn the motor on and off was too inconvenient for my sister (I dont blame her). I paid £90 plus VAT at the local Citoren dealers to ensure I got the right part. Other online factors had the part at £80 plus VAT so there didn't seem to be many great savings to be had. I also had a look at ebay but the pictures of the fans offered seemed to differ from the removed part so I didn't buy there either despite some good prices. I was a bit anxious getting my sister to pay out over £100 just in case the fault was elsewhere.

Anyway, apart from being awkward to get at, with the fan being situated in a dark footwell under the dash, the replacement went fine. There were just the three screws to hold the fan and a little bit of cable disconecting once the carpet trim had been removed. The controls now work again and I am owed even more favours.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread.
