Audi A4 B7 - audi 1.9 TDI or 2.0 TDI - deary

Hi, I'm looking to buy a AUDI A4 S-line a B7 one, problem is is it best to go for the 1.9 TDI or the 2.0 TDI, I've noticed you can get both engines on the B7.

I've read comments on problems with the 2.0 TDI, but not much feedback on the 1.9 TDI, is there a certain era of A4 B7's best to buy, certain milleage etc.

Currently drive a 2003 Golf GT TDI 130, Great reliabililty and MPG, so looking for something similar, but 4 or 5 door, more family size.

even though i'm looking at pre - DPF?

Are the petrols any good?

There are more problems than simply the DPF such as clutch / flywheel / balancer shaft

the 1.9 engine - what BHP is it?

I thought the 1.9 didn't have a balancer shaft.

I personally have never had an issue with the clutch / dual mass flywheel with the 1.9 - as of 120k (I know tempting fate!)

The 1.9 engine you have in the Golf is a good one.

High-mileage diesels can be liable to major failure, but this applies more to the newer engines with their various appendages which go disastrously wrong. The 1.9TDI is a relatively old design and has less to go wrong, and therefore a good reputation. An A4 with this engine would be less of a gamble, but there are plenty of 2.0 PDs that give good service if properly looked after and with FSH.

But as implied above, consider whether your annual mileage justifies the need a diesel. The A4 has some good petrol engines as well.

i drive roughly 60miles a day 5 days a week, get 50mpg out of the golf, so hence a diesel has been great for me.

there are plenty of 2.0tdi's out there, not as many 1.9tdi's, i know not to touch the 170bhp as they seem to have much more problems than the 140bhp's

Firstly, on the DMF issue, the petrol A4's all have DMF's as well and so does your current Golf.

As to the petrol A4's they are not very popular and nothing special and if you're used to the economy of your current Golf I do not think you will be very happy with one.

The 1.9 is less complicated than the 2.0 and seems a more solid design but it is down on power compared to what you are used to. The 2.0 has some known issues but there are an enormous number of them out there in endless different cars and most ar trundling along at very high mileages just fine.

It looks like you've done your research on the 2.0 so I'd be inclined to just check no common issues are present at purchase point and you'll probably be fine.

True, but as far as I was aware the VAG 1.9 doesn't (not unless it crept in on something like the Superb Greenline 1.9) however with the BMW 2.0 diesel of this era (circa 2000-2008) had a bad reputation of bad engine & turbo damage due to swirl flap ingress into the engine.

Not all modern diesels - for example BMW's 325d and 525d dont IIRC

It's not whether they have swirl flaps or not - it's whether there have been reports of them breaking off and being injested by the engine - therefore requiring a new engine. Been quite a few reports of these with BMW's
