Whats the best small car on a £1500 budget?
I currently drive a Land Rover Freelander. I love it, but my conscience says I need a less polluting small car for my 23-mile round commute on country roads. My needs are, low mpg, not a sports car, sub £1500 and reliable. Any ideas please?

There's an environmental argument that it makes more sense to keep an older, diesel car on the road than replace it with something less polluting. If you do want to replace it, I wouldn't limit your search to specific models. See what's being sold privately locally, with a long MoT and evidence of regular servicing. A Ford Fiesta or Toyota Yaris could be a sensible option, or a Honda Civic if you'd prefer something a bit bigger.

More room and better handling than the previous version. Excellent crash test rating. 1.4 D-4D does 50mpg +.
