If you have received a Fixed Penalty Notice and have been offered a speed awareness course as an alternative to a fine and penalty points, we would always recommend taking the course. Penalty points will stay on your licence for four years and will affect your insurance premiums for a least five years, whereas a speed awareness course takes a few hours. You also do not need to inform your insurance company that you have undertaken a speed awareness course, so it will not affect your premiums.
